To become NDT Inspector certification is based on two elements. 1) Required formal classroom training and 2) documented experience hours. We base our classroom training hours on the most stringent of standards so that we can cover this requirement. Experience hours are gained through your employer and should be documented as earned. In most cases once both of these elements have been meet you are then certifiable in the desired method but keep in mind a companies written practice is what governs the certification process.
Once you have achieved the above mentioned two elements your employer will then give you a general, specific and practical exam. Once these three exams have been passed, a current eye exam administered and passed and copies of your training records attached you are then certified in the tested method. Some employers may require additional documents such as a diploma and/or GED, resume and such. Again, please keep in mind that a companies written practice will govern this process and it can change from employer to employer but the above mentioned is a sample process.
